Before delving into how CO₂ fire extinguishers work, it's crucial to grasp the concept of the fire triangle. Fires require three key elements to burn:
Fuel: This is the material that's burning, such as wood, paper, gasoline, or electrical equipment.
Oxygen: Fires need oxygen from the air to sustain combustion.
Heat: Heat is the energy required to raise the temperature of the fuel to its ignition point, leading to combustion.
Removing any one of these elements can extinguish a fire. CO₂ fire extinguishers target the oxygen component, disrupting the combustion process.
The Role of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
CO₂ is a colorless, odorless gas that exists naturally in the Earth's atmosphere. It's composed of two oxygen atoms bonded to a single carbon atom, forming a stable molecule. CO₂ is often used in fire extinguishers because of its unique properties:

Pull the Pin: To activate a CO₂ fire extinguisher, the user starts by pulling a safety pin or breaking a tamper seal. This step ensures that the extinguisher is ready for use and prevents accidental discharge.
Aim: The user should aim the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the fire. This is crucial because CO₂ works by displacing oxygen at the fire's source.
Squeeze the Handle: When the handle is squeezed, it releases the pressurized CO₂ gas stored within the extinguisher's cylinder. The gas flows through a hose and nozzle, directed toward the fire.
Displacement of Oxygen: As the CO₂ gas discharges from the nozzle, it rapidly expands and cools. This cooling effect helps lower the temperature of the fuel, making it more difficult for the fire to sustain itself. Simultaneously, the released CO₂ displaces oxygen, reducing the concentration of oxygen around the fire.
